Chapter 12

“The exceptional will always face criticism from the unexceptional. While courage is a switch you must flip in order to push through it, courage alone will not sustain you. For, in order to continuously succeed, you must have passion, resiliency, optimism, and above all else, people skills.

I challenge you to be exceptional for your family, your faith, your community, and your Country!”

—Christopher Mark Heben

One of the things that stuck with me from the cover of that Popular Mechanics, what originally drew me to the Navy SEALs, was that Heckler & Koch MP-5 the SEAL held in his hands. And yet, here we were, more than two-thirds of the way through BUD/S and my class had not trained with any live weapons. Saying that I was ready would be a colossal understatement. I was super ready. I was more excited and eager to learn about weapons than a North Korean is to make plans to defect!

But that’s just how it is in BUD/S; you don’t actually pick up a weapon until after you’ve survived Hell Week and First Phase, Pool Comp and Second Phase, and are cleared hot to head into the last phase of Navy SEAL training—Phase Three, aka Land Warfare Phase. The one awesome thing that happened before anyone touched weapons was that you were issued Woodland Camouflage BDUs or Cammies. Believe it or not, this was a huge flipping deal! Up to that point you’ve been wearing these Gomer Pyle greens, and stick out like a sore thumb. They are not rip-stop fabric, so they stayed soaked forever. And when they’re wet and sandy, they weigh more than an anti-shark, chain-mail suit, minus the protection of course. But once again, it’s all really part of the mind game taking place at BUD/S. If you can picture a Spartan agoge mixed with a Roman ludis dropped down onto some of the most expensive real estate on earth, that’s BUD/S. No prisoners. No mercy. And it’s all housed in the middle of a vacationer’s dream. We finally shed our Gomer Pyle greens and started wearing high-speed, low-drag, combat-sexy, rip-stop woodland cammies. We all felt like underwater gangsters that day. Well, at least I did! The only other times I wore woodland camouflage before that were on Halloween or when I was playing Army with my grade-school buddies. And I bought that pair at the local Army/Navy store. Today, however, my government was issuing them to me. It could only get better from here, I thought…erroneously. Hell, I already had the sticker for SEAL Team Eight, so how bad could the next two months really be? Stand the F by, Heebs!

Well, I was still at BUD/S. And the Land Warfare Phase is actually a lot of epic shit rolled into two crazy months. The Navy saves this for those last eight weeks because at the end of this phase you are deadly proficient and the master of a few deadly skill sets. Thanks to the Navy, you are an expert
